Your trailer's electric brakes do not interact with the hydraulic brakes on your Armada. The two systems are entirely separate from one another. If the brakes on the Armada are in good working order the only way that they would heat up from towing is if the trailer brakes were not working and the Armada's had to do all the work of stopping both the vehicle and the trailer. It sounds like you have some wiring issues on your trailer that shouldn't be too hard to clear up. Either someone ran both of your taillights to the the passenger side stop/turn circuit or you have a short between the two circuits and somehow only the passenger side works for both. Normally the running light circuit gets ran to both side of the trailer so it's possible that someone mistakenly wired it wrong.

It sounds to me as if there is one of three problems going on. The most likely problem is that the brake assembly on the right side is not properly adjusted. There is an access hole in the backing plate to insert a brake adjusting tool through and turn the adjuster in or out to properly adjust the trailer brakes.

I tried to find the fuse/relays locations in the 2005 Nissan Armada owner's manual but that information is not present. If you check the lids for the in-cab fuse panel and power distribution box under the hood that should tell you all of the locations related to tow package wiring.

What you are describing sounds very much like a ground issue. The trailer lighting functions work properly until the running lights are used. When the running/clearance lights are activated, full amperage is drawn through the system which is when a problem like this will show itself.

It is very common for the Armada to lack a relay that allows your trailer's running lights to function. It is possible that in addition to fuses there is a missing or blown relay that is associated with the 12 volt circuit on your 2013 Nissan Armada. If a relay is missing or blown that would explain why there isn't power on that circuit.
Take a look at the video I have linked. The brown relay used activates the 12 volt circuit. If that relay is missing or blown then adding a new one will activate that circuit.
