This is the first boat trailer winch I've owned that I believe is heavy duty enough for my boat. My suggestion to anyone shopping for a boat winch is to buy one much larger than the ratings say. That being said, I love this winch and would highly recommend it.

by:

Much better than the single speed winch that came with the boat. Just switch positions of the handle and in low gear you can load much easier.

by:

Replaced an older DL with a new 2000 lb two speed version, does the job and them some!!

by:

Rapid delivery

by:

Thank goodness its made in America. Looks great. I will be using it for a boat. Haven't put it on trailer yet but it looks well made. Worth the extra money.

Excellent. Very well made.

by:

Winch Works well. Outstanding customer support from etrailer.com!

by:

The winches were received, but I see the they do not lock in both forward and reverse directions. I need the winch to lock in both winding directions. Can you please let me know what you recommend as replacement winches?

It looks like youre wanting a brake winch. A brake winch will hold the load in forward or reverse, and will not freewheel. If you use the provided link, you can see our ion of brake winches.

by:

Replaced the same model winch on my boat trailer so mounting and fit was perfect, 2 speed gearing helps on steeper ramps and because it did not come with a strap I was able to pick the exact length for my application. Great price and support from eTrailer always and quick shipping.

by:

Decent two speed winch. A big improvement over the original single speed winch with just the right mechanical advantage for winching the boat up the final half of the trailer.

After a year of use in fresh-water bolted to a galvanized boat trailer, the winch base is beginning to rust. Im painting with galvanized paint to try and preserve it longer.

by:

Replaced this exact winch on my boat trailer which was original equipment and provided 18 years of service being used 200-300 days per year for a fishing charter business.

by:

Thanks etrailer. Got product on time and installed… back to the lake.

by:

Thank you for the excellent service and the prompt delivery of the exact product I was looking for. I will be looking your way again the next time I require trailer products to make my life easier.

by:

Great product and awesome customer service. Will purchase again from etrailer.com

by:

I love this website! Service from etrailer is the best! I ordered this trailer winch on Thursday and it was delivered on Friday. Videos of your items are extremely helpful. I will shop this website again for sure.

by:

By far the best you could get. I bought multiple ones and used all of them in different situations. If I didn’t have them I would have been in big trouble.

by:

Fast shipping and winch worked great for replacing an old Shelby winch.

by:

Paula in the sales dept. was extremely helpful!!
she took my order and also issued a return for some other parts that I had ordered!!
Thank you Paula for your hard work and attention

by:

Fits perfectly and works great.

by:

product arrived in short order and was what I wanted. good job. GCC

See what our Experts say about this Dutton-Lainson Trailer Winch

  • How to Pick Out Manual Boat Winch
Generally when picking out a winch for a boat trailer the ratio is 2 to 1 meaning you would need a winch with roughly half the capacity as the weight of the boat. With good rollers and a short winching distance the ratio increases to 3 to 1, but with long winching distances and wooden bunks like what you currently have the ratio is 1 to 1. The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL14725 should work well for you. It has a 2,000 lb capacity. Or the part # DL15440 that you referenced which has a...

  • How to Choose a Replacement Hand Winch
The correct winch for your needs will depend on several factors, such as what you're using the winch for, where you're using it and the amount of weight of the load. If by 'DL 2000' winch, you're meaning a Dutton-Lainson winch capable of pulling 2000 lbs, the # DL14725 would be an okay choice. However, that 2000 lb capacity is with one layer of rope/cable wrapped around the drum. With each subsequent layer, the capacity is reduced by 10 %. This is a two speed winch, with a gear ratio of...

  • Correct Replacement Winch Handle For Dutton-Lainson DL2000A Winch
I was able to verify with the manufacturer, Dutton-Lainson, the exact replacement handle you need for your Dutton-Lainson 2000A winch, which is the following part number: - Replacement Quick Attach Winch Handle for Dutton Lainson Winch # DL70330

  • Cable Length Capacity on the DL14725
Good question. The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch - TUFFPLATE Finish - 2 Speed - Direct Drive - 2,000 lbs part # DL14725 is rated to hold 58 feet of 9/32" cable. That cable has a diameter is 3 times that of what you intend to use on it with the 3/16. With that said this winch should be able to handle 174 feet of the 3/16" cable that you require. Keep in mind that you would need to pay careful attention when spooling up the cable to ensure that it is tight and layered properly.

  • Replacement For Dutton-Lainson Winch DL2000
The Dutton-Lainson DL2000 is indeed different as it is an earlier model of the DL2000A; I checked with Dutton-Lainson and they do not offer replacement parts for the older DL2000, and said that parts are not interchangeable between models. So while I know that is not the news you were looking to hear, the best option is to replace your DL2000 with the updated DL2000A, which is the following part number: - Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL14725 This is compatible with either the Hand Winch...

Generally when picking out a winch for a boat trailer the ratio is 2 to 1 meaning you would need a winch with roughly half the capacity as the weight of the boat. With good rollers and a short winching distance the ratio increases to 3 to 1, but with long winching distances and wooden bunks the ratio is 1 to 1. So you have rollers and a long winching distance so 2 to 1 is the correct ratio. That means you would need a 1,500 lb winch at minimum. The Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL14725...

  • Replacement Handle for Dutton-Lainson DL2000A Winch
The # DL70334 will fit your Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch # DL14725. However, it originally comes with a 9-1/2" long handle. Unless you want a shorter handle for some reason the # DL70330 would be a better replacement option.

  • Can the Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch, # DL10970 be Used with a Strap
The Dutton-Lainson Worm Gear Hand Winch, # DL10970, is designed for a cable no wider than 9/32 inches. If you had a strap that narrow, it could work, but the winch is not really designed for that application. A comparable winch that is rated for use with a strap is the Dutton-Lainson Trailer Winch, # DL14725. This winch has a drum capacity that can handle a strap 38 feet in length.

We do carry a left-hand winch very similar to the 2,000 lb capacity winch # DL14725 you asked about, with the only difference being the left-hand winch has a larger 2,500 lb capacity. The winch you need is the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch - 2 Speed - Direct Drive - Left Side Handle - 2,500 lbs # DL15403. The mounting pattern for the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch - TUFFPLATE Finish - 2 Speed - Direct Drive - 2,000 lbs # DL14725 you were looking at is the exact same as your current DL1802A, but the overall dimensions of the winches are different. The overall width of your DL1802A is 6-7/8" wide where the # DL14725 is narrower at 6-15/32" wide, but the # DL14725 is 8-13/16" long where your DL1802A is only 8-1/8" long. • Hand Winch Recommendation for Building a Homemade Log Arch
You could use just about any type of hand winch you would like to build a log arch. You will need to determine the capacity that you will need to lift the logs you will be cutting. Having been around a farm most of my life, I would think that a 2,000 lb capacity winch would be sufficient, since you will not need to lift the whole weight of the log with it and if you are cutting fire wood you could reduce the length of the log. I posted a link to all of the 2,000 lb winches that we stock...

Yes, the Hand Winch Strap with Safety Hook part # DL24251 will work just fine with the Dutton-Lainson Hand Winch part # DL14725. However, please note that you will be limited to the weight capacity of the winch which is 2,000 lbs because it is lower than that of the strap which is 4,000 lbs but this won't cause any issues it is just something that you need to be conscious of.

  • What is the Bolt Hole Mounting Pattern for Dutton Lainson Trailer Hand Winch # DL14725
I will be happy to show you the mounting hole dimensions for hand winch # DL14725. I have included a picture that shows them for you. This winch can be used with either a strap, # DL24249, or a cable # DL24104. Straps are much better for marine applications because they will not rust. The strap is rated for 4,000 pounds and the cable is rated for 3,500 pounds. You always want the cable or strap capacity to be at least 1.5 times greater than the winch capacity or higher for safety.

  • Availability of Shorter Winch Handle For Dutton-Lainson Winch Model DL1800A # DL15504
The handle on your Dutton Lainson Winch Model DL1800A is 9-1/2" long so there are two short handle options. The # DL70336 which is 6" long, or the # DL70334 which is 8-1/2" long. Keep in mind that the shorter the handle is the less leverage you will have and the harder it will be to winch your boat onto the trailer. I recommend going with the longest winch handle you can fit for the easiest time using the winch. I included videos of the products mentioned for you to take a look at.

The diameter of the spools are exactly the same at 6" so it's really just going to come down to whether you want single-speed or two-speed. • Boat Trailer Winch Recommendation for a 1982 Sea Ray 22-1/2 Foot Boat
Sea Ray made a lot of boats in the 1982 model year. Models listed at 22 feet top out at just over 4,000 pounds. Since the trailer you are using has rollers you can go with a winch that is rated lower than the actual weight of the boat. However, going with a higher capacity winch will make it easier on the winch so it will last longer and easier on you when cranking in the boat. For marine applications I recommend a winch that either comes with a strap or that can be used with a strap....
