Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite Tested Tough

Draw-Tite's Tested Tough program provides testing standards far superior to those outlined by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), the go-to source for engineering professionals.

Each Draw-Tite trailer hitch receiver undergoes extensive fatigue testing and static testing with the ball mount that is either supplied or recommended for use with that particular hitch, thus ensuring results that are applicable to real life use. Fatigue testing is also conducted on hitches rated for use with weight-distribution systems.

In addition, Draw-Tite performs static testing on a simulated automobile, as opposed to the rigid fixture used for SAE testing, resulting in a more true-to-life scenario.

I am pleased with this hitch. It does what its supposed to. The mounting of it was easy even after a few beers. I use a hitch basket with two 55qt coolers strapped down to it. It doesnt move, its very sturdy. The hitch doesnt stick out so its very shin/knee friendly. Pretty awesome. No compaints.

As always I am very happy with the prompt service and shipping as well the quality of the product. My only disappointment is, I chose this Draw Tite hitch because it had the extra hole for the J-Pin (anti rattle device). Mine did not come with it. That was a let down

Installing this was far less painful than I had imagined. For one, the video is extremely helpful. I just watched it until I needed to pause it, and that was really great. It took me about 2.5 hours to get this installed, but that's only because I was by myself and had never done anything like this before. There were three things that I found difficult: the hardest part was getting the push pins back into their respective places (make sure you don't break them when you're removing them), my dremel kept acting up so it took a while to cut the proper sized opening on the bottom of the fascia, and I couldn't figure out how to get one clip into place to snap the bumper back into place. But if you'll notice, those things have NOTHING to do with the trailer hitch! Putting the trailer hitch on was seamless and so easy as far as I'm concerned. I haven't towed anything with it yet but I'm soooo looking forward to it! You can see all the tools I used to install the hitch in one of my review pictures. It's not a lot of tools, which I think is awesome! Some tricks I used to make the installation even easier: 1) taping the lights up with electrical tape once I removed the brake light covers to keep them out of the way, 2) putting the bumper fascia on two folding chairs to keep it off the floor, 3) I didn't have a ratchet screw driver to get the bottom screw off of the mudflap, so I used a drill bit and a wrench, which worked pretty well, 4) I kept the push pins and screws near where I took them off of the car so I would remember which parts went back where.
All in all, a pretty painless installation for a complete newbie at this kind of thing, and I love the way it looks.

by:

The hitch arrived on time and in perfect condition, having been well packed. The video instructions and PDF annotated online instructions made the installation process easy! A friend helped me, which made it even easier as we bounced back and forth with what we found best as we went removing each of the clips and parts and so on, but nothing was difficult. The reason I wanted this hitch was to support a hitch-mounted bike rack that this friend sold me when he upgraded to a much larger rack for his truck. I've also ordered a hitch-mounted 500lb cargo carrier basket and matching bag for distant camping trips this year. I'm really excited now that I'll be able to rent a trailer and help my family with upcoming house moving. The new hitch looks sleek and perfect!

by:

The video was very helpful and straight forward. completed the Hitch installation in 1hr 30mins, referring to the video during each step, since this was a DIY install. very happy and proud of this project because a did not break or loose in parts and saved expensive labor costs. Waiting for the new Hitch mount bike rack to arrive. thank you eTrailer staff.

I love the exact fitment of the hitch. I had no problem with the install and the video instructions was very easy to follow.

by:

This is an excellent hitch receiver. Because of the design, it is mostly out of sight. The only thing visible is the receiver portion. I use it primarily for a bicycle rack. I haven't used it on a camper, but I'm sure it would be great.

I purchased the Draw-Tite Max Frame Hitch Receiver for my 2017 Subaru Outback. The people at Etrailer were great to deal with and helped me to make my choice in purchasing the correct hitch receiver for my Outback. I wanted a hitch that was like a custom fit and the Draw-Tite Max is the one. The instructions were easy to understand and it took about an hour to install. The service from Etrailer was great and they were always there to help me with my questions. I also purchased the Hopkins Plug in simple wiring harness which was very easy to install.

We bought this for our Subaru Outback to carry the Kuat Transfer v2 bike rack, also purchased from etrailer.com. These two work together great! We had the hitch installed by our local mechanic, who did a fine job. This hitch looks nice on the car and clears our steep curb out front with no problem.

Rugged enough to transport our heavy e-bikes. Love the locking feature for a no worry adventure. And love the simple design that allows dirt to fall thru rather than get caught up on platforms or wheel cradles like other designs. I’d highly recommend this rack.

by:

Hitch mount fit the car as specified. The mounting directions (and accompanying youtube videos) were very helpful; follow them exactly as directed. I have used it for hauling bikes on a rack a number of times over the past year.

by:

It fit the car as described and the installation instructions were detailed. There was damage to the coating in half a dozen places down to bare steel which I had to repair. Hence the average rating

by:

1. I ordered the Draw-Tite hitch from etrailer based on the added feature of the extra set of pin holes for the stabilization pin. The hitch I received and installed did not have the extra pin holes. See pictures below. Unfortunately I didn’t’ realize this until I completed the installation. The packaging and instructions had the correct item number. But to tell you the truth I don’t know what I received…. Emailed customer service but the person who replied back was clueless… I am now shopping for a cargo rack but will most likely buy from that tool store in the northern part of the country.
2. Like others measure twice, cut once. I didn’t need to cut the center hole on the bottom of the fascia.. Used two zip ties to attach it since I couldn’t line up the hole sufficiently for the push pin.

Hi Tom, Thanks for your feedback! Draw-Tite updated their hitches and no longer have the second hole for the J-pin.

The trailer hitch is built Rock Solid. It will most likely Outlast my car. Excellent product fairly easy installation.

by:

This was much easier than I expected. It was more work to get the back bumper cover off than to put this on - once I unbolted the rear bumper. It all went back together well. I used a serrated knife to shave the bumper pad down to fit better. Between the supplied video and youtube, this isn't bad if you're somewhat mechanically inclined. Very well worth the effort since the fit and finish is top notch. Thanks!

2013 Subaru Outback Wagon

Well made. Easy install of the hitch. Most difficult part was dealing with the pus pin retainers and pulling the fascia back to the wheel well. Watch the video. It was very well done. The written instructions were lacking to say the least.

by:
2014 Subaru Outback Wagon

I chose this receiver because of the excellent video comparing it to 4 other options with pros and cons of each. Then I bought it from etrailer because they linked a very good installation video to it, as well as the other receivers in they presented. Then I bought a wiring kit because they had a video about that as well, it also compared several wiring harnesses and made a suggestion of the best one, which was not the most expensive either. I will be installing it with the help of another great how-to video on that.

by:

Appears to be sturdy.
Mounting holes
don't match up nicely. Some finesse and bolt scrape to put it on. Due to thickness of hitch mounting plate, the bumper cover doesn't quite line up with all clips for snapping in to place. I noticed that someone mentioned leaving the foam block off to allow proper fitment of cover. ? Not sure everything is going to stay attached. We'll see.

by:

The item arrived on time, but appears to have been damaged during shipping. The powder coating was chipped off of two rounded corners.

Unit installs easily and exactly as described with minimal tools. etrailer website is a great resource for install tips.

by:

The instructional video was excellent. I just followed it to a T and had no issues. Just be careful with the plastic rivets, especially if you don't have a plastic clip removal tool (as I didn't). The measurement and Dremel cutout part was as easy as it gets.

Great product at a good price. This is my 3rd hitch from Etrailer - for my wife's and two sons' Subarus. I would buy from Etrailer again if I need another hitch. Bonus - clear-speaking customer support agents, good instructions come with the product, and even better instructional videos on the website. They even have videos about this versus that hitch, as usually you'll have options. This is how you do business.

Went with the drawtite. Best value in my opinion..the eco hitch would have been my choice(I just think it looks a bit cooler and sits more at a factory height tow hitch..about an inch difference from the draw tite and eco hitch) but the drawtite looks super clean once installed!
It’s not a hard install and requires basic minimus tools. The video is real helpful. Tow infinity and beyond!

  • Options for Carrying Step Thru Bike with 2018 Subaru Outback Wagon
Since there isn't a trunk mounted bike rack that fits your vehicle that can carry step thru bike frames without a frame adapter your best options would be either a platform style bike rack that would fit in a hitch or a trunk rack and a frame adapter. Between the two I really prefer the hitch racks as you get a much more secure attachment and it doesn't touch the vehicle paint which prevents potential for damage. For your 2017 Subaru Outback, the Thule Camber 4-Bike Rack # TH9056 is a really nice option and will work perfectly with the Draw-Tite Max-Frame Trailer Hitch Receiver # 76227. The reason for that is, when we installed this hitch on a 2017 Outback, we found it measured 3 inches from the hitch pin hole to the edge of the bumper, and the Camber measures 7 inches from the hitch pin to the closest part of the rack, so you'll have plenty of room for the rack to fit without any interference. I'd recommend the Tekonsha # 118467 which is a confirmed fit for your Outback, as you can see in the linked installation video. U-Haul trailers will typically use a surge coupler that uses the trailer's inertia when the tow vehicle brakes to apply the trailer brakes, so you will not need a brake controller. When the vehicle brakes the surge coupler will compress which is effect just like pressing a brake pedal.
