Axle Dimensions

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

There are multiple ways to measure the length of an axle beam, but the hub-face-to-hub-face and spring-center-to-spring-center lengths are the most accurate. Hub face (A) refers to the length of the axle measured from the base of one wheel stud to the base of the wheel stud on the opposite side of the axle (when hubs are mounted on the beam).

The spring center (B) is the approximate width of your trailer. It is measured from the center of the spring seat on one side of the axle to the center of the seat on the other. This axle beam comes with the spring seats welded on.

Hub Face and Spring Center Measurements on Standard Trailer Axle

Another helpful measurement to have is the flange-to-flange (C) length, which is measured from the outside of one brake flange to the outside of the one opposite. This length may be easy to obtain if you are replacing an axle, but it's important to note that this measurement is not the preferred method for determining which axle will best fit your trailer.

If you are replacing your trailer's axle, you should be able to figure out which type you need by determining your trailer's capacity, the bolt pattern of your wheels, the brake type and the aforementioned lengths.

Dexters

Dexters are made of high-strength steel and come with spindles and spring seats welded on. The spring seats are attached to the underside of the axle so that the leaf springs (sold separately) can mount beneath the axle. The result of this underslung design is a trailer that rides a bit lower for quick and easy loading and unloading.

Each axle is manufactured to create a certain camber angle. This ensures that the angle of the wheels is correct for your towing needs. Because the primary concern when towing is maintaining controlled, in-line movement, each axle is made so that your trailer's tires will run along the pavement evenly, with contact across the width of the tread. The result is excellent straight-line acceleration for steady, in-line tracking. You might notice the bend near the center of the axle; this is what ensures the proper camber angle. Having the center ride a bit higher and the sides of the axle bent lower allows the axle to give just enough to compensate for the load.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: 8 on 6-1/2 means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: 5 on 4-1/2 means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance (D) from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

One year later, still works like the day I bought it. Heavy duty axle which has boosted my trailer capacity big time. Smooth and easy maintenance.

by:

The procduct I have bought fell right into place and they protected the parts great and I'll recommend to anyone who needs trailer parts.

by:

Prompt delivery. Shipment was well protected from in transit damage. The axle fit my trailer perfectly and the u-bolts I ordered with the axle fit as they were supposed to. My wheels were old with a slightly larger bolt circle than the new hubs. Before I abrasive saw cut the old u-bolts, I tried the new hubs with the old wheels and they did not match up. I had to get new tire and wheels with the 4.5 bolt circle mounting holes. Not a big deal as I needed to replace the ties anyway. But testing the old wheels with the new hubs before cutting the the old u-bolts meant I didn't have downtime on the trailer while waiting for the new wheels and tires. The whole changeover, removing the old axle, installing the new axle, and mounting the tires took me about 3 hours at a leisurely pace.

by:

Arrived in good condition and what I ne eded.

by:

Great axle. Very pleased with it. I was shipped the wrong axle butt etrailer sent the correct one and I was able to ship the wrong one back later. Got me on the road a little quicker.
Other than that mishap,Ian pleased with the axle and would consider buying from etrailer in the future.

by:

Direct replacement axle for an older Big Tex landscape trailer I own. Make sure you understand what measurements you need to take from your old axle before ordering. Installed easily, all required parts where in the box (including grease and lug nuts). Also purchased the U-bolt kit.

by:

Installed the dexter 3500 axle and new springs on my 17ft boat trailer and immediately drove the trailer for over 700 miles in one day and the trailer was as smooth as could be. Great axle even came with a tub of marine grease.

by:

E trailer has excellent products and great customer service. I really think the videos on each product is very very helpful. I’ve had dealings with other trailer parts vendors and etrailer is the best of all to deal with. Hats off to this well organized company. They will stay on my trailer need list.

  • How to Choose Replacement Axle If No Replacement Hubs are Available
We do have a potential solution for you, but no hubs that fit those measurements you gave, unfortunately. That isn't altogether surprising though considering you said you had mobile home axles, which are not meant for traveling more than once. So the best option we have is for you to replace your current axle. In order to choose the correct replacement axle for your trailer you will need to know the dimensions of your current axle's hub face to hub face and spring center to spring center...

We have the standard size 3500 lb. axles that work with the Kenda 205/65-10 Bias Trailer Tire with 10" Galvanized Wheel part # AM3H490 or the 5 on 4.5" bolt pattern. Typically a 3500 lb. axle is going to 89". These are generally selected by the center to center of the spring seats and the hub face to hub face measurements. If you have an old axle let me know what these measurements are and I can help find a match. If you're building a trailer to use those tires you will need to go with...

  • Single Axle Hay Dolly Axle Upgrade with 1.375 Inner and 1.250 Outer Bearings on a Mobile Home Axle
The only recommendation I could make for you would be to install new axles on your trailer. Mobile home axles are designed as one time use axles. They usually have odd spindle sizes on them that make them incompatible with standard trailer hubs. Attached is a page that has all of the axles we have with the correct hubs included. You will want to determine which will suit your trailer based on the overall length axle you want from hub face to hub face, then select the distance between...

I do have an option for you, however, we don't carry any hubs that use bearing number LM67045 for both the inner and outer bearings, or any hubs that use # 02475, # 14125A, # 15123 or # LM67048 (also 1.25 inch ID) for their inner and outer bearings. From what I was able to find, this type of hub was used on 2,500 lb axles on marine or utility trailers dating back to the 1960's for which replacement parts are nearly impossible to find today. • Can Axle Spring Seats Be Relocated
You can certainly relocate the spring perches if you wish, it's a pretty common practice. The process of removing them will likely render them useless, however so you'll likely need to replace them. We offer replacements as part # TRSS238 which are compatible with a 2-3/8 inch diameter axle beam like what the # 35545I-ST-89 axle you'd looked at uses.

  • Recommendation For Replacing A Dayton Fayette 9222 Hub
Having a 1.25 spindle, it can be a few bearings that will fit. However, there will not be a hub that uses both an inner and outer bearing of this size. With that said, I highly recommend replacing your axles with something that will use a more common bearing combo. Doing this will require a few things. If you look at the Dexter Trailer Axle with Idler Hubs # 35545I-ST-89, it will have a hub face to hub face measurement of 89 inches and a center of one spring seat to the center of the other...

You would have to order an axle from a local tractor or trailer supply store to your specifications. The other option is to use axle-less suspension such as # ASR3500S05.

  • Option For Replacing Axle On Trailer With No Hub Available
The only suggestion I can offer is a replacement axle, and the reason for that is there simply aren't any hubs with a 15118 inner bearing and 09074 outer bearing. I realize this isn't the news you were looking for, but due to the age of the axle and the fact there aren't any replacement hubs, the best option over the long-term will be a new axle.
