Trailer Wiring Recommendation for a 2008 Chevy Express Van
Question:
Is there an advantage, or good reason to use the 31345 with a convertor instead of the 55540. Im assuming it is a matter of amps required by the trailer lights, or is there a short protection issue that matters. The manufacturers push that as selling point, but is it worthwhile? Im hoping for a recommendation rather than a list of available options. Thanks.

Both the trailer wiring harnesses # 31345 and the # 55540 that you referenced have been confirmed to fit your 2008 Chevy Express Van.
Both have their pros and cons. The # 31345 only uses the taillight circuits of your vehicle as signal wires and draws all of the power to illuminate your trailer taillights from the vehicle battery. This is a better setup overall that will reduce the risk of over drawing your vehicle's taillight circuits at the cost of a more in-depth install and a little more cost for the harness.
The # 55540 will install quite a bit easier but won't offer the circuit protection for in the event of a short on your trailer wiring it damaging your vehicle's wiring. If you have a newer trailer with solid wiring this would most likely work just fine. Especially if you have LED taillights on the trailer as they only draw a fraction of what incandescent bulbs draw.
