Troubleshooting Trailer Running Light Circuit that Stopped Working on a 2007 Nissan Xterra
Question:
I installed this kit several months ago and its worked like a charm- for the five times Ive used the trailer since installation. That is until this week. I hooked up the trailer and checked all the lite functions-everything okay. Then I took about a twenty minute trip to the lumber yard. When I was ready to leave, someone flagged me down, telling me I had no tailights. Upon checking, sure enough- no tail lights. Directionals and stop lights were O.K., but no running lights. Upon arriving home, I used a test light at the plug-in, and while I had taillights on the truck functioning, there was no current at the plug-in for the trailer. Im assuming that one or more of the relays under the kick lanel are blown. Is it more likely one of the blue ones or the brown main one, and can they be purchased individually?

Helpful Expert Reply:
Actually the brown relay controls the 12-volt power circuit (which you aren't using), and the blue relays control the turn signal circuits so most likely the problem is a blow fuse in the fuse box of your 2007 Nissan Xterra or one of the other towing relays you had installed in your vehicle.
I would recommend you check the diagram for the fuse panels and relay boxes to see find the trailer running lights circuit and check to see if a fuse or relay is blown. The easiest way to check for a blown relay is to replace it with a known working one. So if you find the running lights circuit relay you could sway it with another known working relay to see if the circuit comes back on.
If you find any that are missing or not working, you can use the Curt Relay Kit # C57000. This kit includes two of the blue relays and one brown.
