Capacity and Fit of Yakima Skybox 18 # Y07336 on 2014 Chevy Suburban

Question:

How many pair of skis can fit in the 18 cubic foot box? How much weight can this box hold? Will it fit onto my 2014 Suburban? It has factory installed crossbars.

According to Yakima, their Skybox 18, part # Y07336 can carry up to four pairs of skis measuring up to 84-1/2 inches long. The box doesn't really have a maximum weight capacity. You'll always be limited by the capacity of your crossbars or the vehicle, whichever is lowest. According to Yakima, the weight capacity of the factory crossbars is 165 lbs, but I'd urge you to confirm this for yourself with the owner's manual or by contacting Chevy.

Will the Skybox 18 fit your crossbars and allow you to fully open the rear hatch? You'll need to do some measuring to find out. First, the box will be compatible with the crossbars if they can be adjusted so that their spread (distance from the center of the front bar to the center of the rear bar) is between 24-42 inches apart. The crossbars themselves can be no wider than 3-1/2 inches or no taller than 1-11/16 inches. To determine if you'll be able to fully open your liftgate, move the front crossbar as far forward as possible. Then, from the center of the crossbar, measure rearward to where the roof meets the liftgate. If this distance is at least 57 inches, the box will fit just great, and allow you to fully open the liftgate.

Since the Suburban has a large roof, I don't think that there will be a fit problem. To safely access your roof box, you might also be interested in a tire step like part # HE4040.
