Compatibility of Dexter # K71-651 Electric over Hydraulic Brake Actuator with GM OEM Brake Control
Question:
I am looking to convert my fifth wheel drum brakes to Kodiak disc brakes electric/hydraulic I plan on using a Dexter hydraulic pump. Just curious if my factory GM brake controller will be compatible with this system or will I need to install a new controller?

According to Dexter Axle, beginning with the 2015 model year, the GM OEM brake controller will be compatible with the Dexter Electric Over Hydraulic Trailer Brake Actuators like part # K71-651. Previous model years weren't compatible, and would need to use an aftermarket brake controller.
I really like the Tekonsha P3, part # 90195. The P3 has a setting that makes it compatible with electric over hydraulic actuators, and is very easy to use and to set up. I really like the fact that the diagnostic features of the controller will spell out in plain English (or French or Spanish if you'd prefer) any problems that might occur, rather than using an error code you'll need to remember or write down somewhere. To install the controller, you'll need a wiring adapter # 3016 for 2014 1500 series models and 1500, 2500 and 3500 series 2015 models. Otherwise, the controller simply hardwires into the existing tow package wiring located up under the dash between the steering column and the emergency brake pedal, as shown in the FAQ article I'll link to.
Installing an aftermarket controller on a vehicle equipped with the OEM GM controller means that you'll need to bypass the factory brake output circuit that runs from the controller to the 7-way trailer connector at the rear of the vehicle. I'll also link you to an FAQ article that explains that procedure as well.
