Installing 7-way Trailer Connector and Brake Controller on 1995 Cadillac Fleetwood

Question:

Good Morning! We have a 1995 Cadillac Fleetwood that is equipped with the optional and rare V4P 7,000 lb.-rated Trailer Package. Part of this package includes a pre-wired 5-way flat wire harness that is stored in a leather pouch in the trunk however, the 2013 Riverside/Water Fall Retro Model 155 travel trailer we are looking to buy has a 7-way blade connector. Does E-trailer have a kit that would allow me to convert the 5-way to a 7-way? What is the safest way to hook up the +12V charging lead which I will have to run from the front of the car? Thank you!

We do indeed have an adapter that will convert a 4 or a 5-pole connector to a 7-way, part # 37185.

However, your travel trailer will likely have electric brakes, and to actuate them you'll need to install a brake controller like the Tekonsha Primus, part # TK90160. To install the controller, we offer an installation kit, part # ETBC7. The kit incudes everything needed to install a controller, including the 37185 adapter I mentioned above.

I'll link you to the instructions for the install kit so you can look them over. I'll also link you to a video showing the kit being used to install a brake controller on a Chevy Silverado. Although the vehicle is different, the actual procedure for installing the controller will be similar on your Fleetwood.

The adapter plugs into your existing trailer connector, and will have 4 additional wires. The white wire will be grounded to the vehicle, and the blue and the black wire will be extended by attaching them to the two wire cable included with the kit. The circuit attached to the blue wire will carry the output from the brake controller, while the circuit attached to the black wire will carry the 12-volt power feed from the vehicle battery. A 40 amp breaker included with the kit will be installed inline on that circuit. The purple wire is usually used for reverse lights. If needed, it will be tapped into the reverse lamp circuit on the vehicle. If it's not needed, the wire can just be bundled up and tucked out of the way.
