Trailer Hitch And Bike Rack Recommendation For 2014 Volkswagen Passat TDI
Question:
2014 Passat TDI Watched info on curt hitch. Noted point about if you used a bike rack you needed to use the support strap due to lever effect. Would the draw-tite/hidden hitch models, though a tad more expensive, be better suited to bike rack duty? I note they look the same same hitch, different brand names? I see those two mount a little differently. Would they be better at handling the load/demands of a bike rack? I would assume same limitation max two bikes on any of them?

For your 2014 Volkswagen Passat TDI, I recommend the Draw-Tite Sportframe Trailer Hitch, part # 24880. This is a Class l hitch and has a 1-1/4 inch receiver opening. I have attached a link to an installation video for this hitch you can check out. With Class l hitches, the maximum number of bikes that can be carried is 2.
We have several bike racks that will work for you. The bike rack I recommend is the Swagman Titan 2 Bike Rack for 1-1/4" and 2" Hitches - Tilting Item # S63400. This rack will work with 1-1/4 and 2 inch hitches, and has a tilting feature which allows you access to the rear of your vehicle when the rack is unloaded.
If you are planning on carrying any bikes with alternative frames like kid's bikes or women's bikes I recommend using an adapter bar like part # 64005. This attaches between the seat post and the handlebar stem and allows the bike to ride more level in the carrier while proving additional ground clearance.
