Does Computer have to be Flashed After Replacing Factory Brake Controller On 2008 Ford F-350

Question:

Good morning, Weve owned this Crew Cab F350 diesel since-new and otherwise have felt the performance of integrated system to be poor. The 2008 integrated-controller, per the third dealer-visit, is alleged to be performing correctly. However, the dealer agrees, having tested it while pulling, it affords no more than 33 of the braking-effectiveness as designed however, theyve no remedy. Might you be able to comment on what may have failed within this integrated system our dealer cannot find or will not comment? Also, the trailer being pulled, when fully-loaded, weighs 7,100 lbs. and has a carrying capability of 8,200 lbs. During testing with the dealer its weight was approximately 6,800 pounds. Second, with the dealers findings, the frustration it has brought, and absence of safety it affords when pulling, switching-to a remote controller appears the best option. Is it necessary to reflash the computer so the dash display doesnt throw faults? Third, and equally frustrating, when our trailer is connected to a 2014 F350 Crew Cab, the integrated brake system works remarkably well. Thank you for your direction

The factory integrated brake controllers, especially the first generations of them, performed poorly as you have described. They are just not designed well and thus not effective. On newer trucks they have gotten better but I would still say an aftermarket controller is superior.

When you install an aftermarket controller in your 2008 Ford F-350 the factory controller will have to be disconnected. This will cause a fault code to appear. That fault code will have to be cleared by your local Ford dealer. The TBC will have to be turned off. Using the IDS, the Ford Technician should access the Programmable Parameters and then select the Personality/Dynamics. Select the TBC and turn it off. The fault code will now be removed.

For an aftermarket controller I recommend the P2, # 90885. It is easy to set up and use and it is reliable. Not to mention it will work much better than the factory controller. You will also need wiring harness # 3034-P.

This adapter plugs into the connector beneath your vehicle's dashboard. To reach the connector, first locate the notch in the access panel in the center of the dash, near the passenger side. Using a trim panel puller, carefully pry the panel out and undo the locking tabs to remove the panel. You will find the mating connector behind this portion of you dashboard. The factory controller will be disconnected and then you can plug in the vehicle end of # 3034-P.
