Tap Size One Size Bigger than M12 - 1.25 for Hitch Install with Stripped Nut

Question:

I stripped two of the nuts on the Sienna. Cleaned them all and chased the threads with an M12 - 1.25 that I purchased for this purpose. Unfortunately when torqueing, two just kept turning. My Dilemma I understand the re-taping concept. My concern is the thickness of the walls of the nut. if I re-tap the next size up, then I am losing the least amount of wall steel on the nut. if I go to a helix coil then I fear that I am taking too much steel away and the nut may crack or fail in the end do you have some practical advice on this. what is the next size up, 1/2? I assumed that you have run into this situation. thanks, ps I already read the articles on this on your site.

I would retap the threads with the next size up. Which from my research would be M12-1.5. If you are still unsure you can take the bolt you have with you to a hardware store, tell them you are in need of a tap that is the next size up, and they will set you up.
