Hopkins Reliance E1 Error Code Appears After Display Ramps Up Power to Trailer Brakes

Question:

I recently helped a girlfriend move her camping trailer with her 2002 Ford explorer equipped with a reliance controller. When applied the digital display begins a countdown up? that ends with E1, and the brakes on the trailer lock up. Is this the same symptom as loose or dirty connections?

The E1 error code on the Reliance brake controller indicates that a trailer is not connected. If the trailer IS connected and you get the E1 code, a probable cause is a dirty trailer connector. Check the trailer connector on the trailer and on the vehicle. Clean out any dirt or corrosion. Corrosion can build up behind the connectors where the wires attach as well.

The numbers counting up is normal on a time-delay brake controller. It is counting up to full power. It can be adjusted how fast or slow it ramps up the power to the trailer brakes. The power can be adjusted lower and that also might help with this problem

You can also examine the trailer brake magnets themselves. If you see the windings coming through then they need to be replaced. I have included a link to an FAQ article for you on how you can further test the magnets.

Once you have the issue resolved I do recommend a new brake controller. A proportional controller such as the P2, # 90885. A proportional controller will apply power to the trailer brakes in proportion to how much the tow vehicle is braking. This is the safest way to stop and it reduces wear and tear on the trailer and vehicle.
