What is the minimum thickness for the surface the A45GB is mounting in?

Rubber grommet # A45GB is 1-1/16 inches deep but the material you are mounting the light in does not have to be that thick. A minimum 3/16 inch should be sufficient. Metal (aluminum or steel) would be the preferred surface. Fiberglass and other similar materials can flex much easier which could result in the light popping out of the hole. But this is not likely if the hole is cut to the proper size (4-1/2 inch diameter).
