First thing you need to do is check the owner's manual of your 2005 Chevy Malibu Maxx under the towing section to see what Chevy lists as the towing capacities of your vehicle.

The Curt Hitch part # C12280 that you referenced is confirmed to fit your vehicle and has towing capacities of 350 lbs tongue weight and 3,500 lbs total trailer weight. If your owner's manual lists a lower figure you will need to go with that as the capacity as a towing setup is only as strong as it's weakest component.
