Ball Mount Options for a 2014 Ram 2500 With OEM Class V Trailer Hitch

Hello, I have a brand new 2014 Ram 2500 4x4 crewcab tradesman with a optional Air rear suspension trailer bag and this is suppose to eliminate weight distribution bars,my question is since after buying the truck I learned the square opening must be Class V as my 2003 ram dually was class IV so all my tow balls and mounts are useless now,can you confirm this option ram does that? and what would you recomend for a tow ball and mount to pull no more then 10,000Lbs.

Most of the domestic truck manufacturers are putting Class V trailer hitches with a 2-1/2 inch receiver on their 3/4 ton trucks, including Dodge. This is mainly because they are building their trucks stronger and stronger each year and they need to install the equipment that can handle the higher capacities.

You have a few different options when it comes to ball mounts and hitch balls. If you want to use your current equipment, you could use a reducer sleeve like part # C45405. This sleeve allows you to use 2 inch hitch accessories with a 2-1/2 inch receiver and it will not reduce the towing capacity of your hitch or your ball mount.

Another option would be to install a Class IV/V hitch with a 2 inch receiver like part # 41929. This hitch was designed to fit below the factory hitch and it has a towing capacity of 12,000 lbs and a tongue weight capacity of 1,200 lbs. Keep in mind, you will always be limited to the towing capacity of the lowest rated component in the towing setup.

Your final option would be to choose a new ball mount that fits the 2-1/2 inch receiver of your OEM hitch. I have attached a help article that explains how to choose the correct ball mount.
