First of all, you will need to install a brake controller. I would recommend a proportional controller, such as the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 part # 90885. To install the controller, we offer a Brake Controller Install Kit, part # ETBC7. The kit includes everything necessary for installing your controller, including the 4 to 7-way adapter.
The adapter would plug into your existing 4-way plug, with four wires remaining. The blue wire would run to the passenger compartment, to carry the output from the brake controller. The white wire would ground to the vehicle. The black wire would run to the positive battery terminal, via the 40 amp circuit breaker included in the kit. The purple wire carries the signal for the trailer reverse lamps, if your trailer is equipped with them. It would tap into the reverse light circuit on the vehicle.
The controller would mount under the dash, preferably to the right of the steering column. It would need to be within easy reach of the driver. The controller has four wires exiting the rear. The blue wire would connect to the output wire ran from the rear of the vehicle. The white wire would ground to the negative battery terminal, the black wire would attach to the positive battery terminal via the 20- or 30-amp breaker included in the kit. The red wire would attach to the brake stoplight switch located above the brake pedal. You will need a circuit tester, such as part # PTW2993 to identify the correct circuit to tap this wire into. You are looking for the wire that shows current only when the brake pedal is pressed.
We have a brake controller installation guide, as well as an installation video that you might find helpful. The video shows an installation on a different vehicle, but the procedure would be similar.
