P3 Brake Controller has Power All the Time on a 2014 Toyota Tundra
Question:
I removed my tekonsha p3 from my 2010 tundra and installed it in my 2014 using the wiring harness that came with the brake controller. When I hook it up the power is on to the controller all the time. Does the 2014 use a different wiring harness?

The 2014 Toyota Tundra uses brake controller harness # 3040-P for a P3 brake controller # 90195. This is the same harness used by the 2010 Tundra. The brake controller will have power all the time but it should shut off (power saving mode) after it senses no movement for about 15 minutes. If you turn off the truck and walk away for about 15 minutes or so, come back and look in the window and it should be in power saving mode. Don't open the door or bump the truck because that might wake it up.
Also if the trailer is connected and there is a short on the trailer magnet wires or the connector is dirty or corroded, that could cause a short and draw power and the controller would not turn off.
Make sure that you have that extra white ground wire on # 3040-P attached to a clean bare metal surface. No paint or anything can be between the ring terminal and the bare metal ground surface. I do not recommend sharing a common ground either. Having its own ground connection is the best option.
You will also want to check the pins on the # 3040-P harness to see if any are bent or corroded because that could be causing a short.
