What is the Closest Trailer Tire in Size to a P235/75-15 Car Tire

Question:

Replacing P235-75R15 tires on a 5 x 4.5 steel rim What would be a correct radial size trailer tire to replace the car rated tires I currently have on my trailer. Its a tandem trailer with 3500lb axles. Very seldom do I haul it fully loaded but I do haul a small 28hp tractor on it from time to time. Mainly looking for tires to replace on the rims I currently have.

As you probably know, car tires should not be used on a trailer. This is because trailer tires are made with a thicker sidewall to handle more vertical load. Car tires are not built this way so it can lead to blow outs.

The closest match to a P235/75-15 car tire would be an ST225/75-15 such as # AM3S862 which has the 5 on 5-1/2 bolt pattern. This is a load range D tire rated for 2,540 pounds at 65 psi.

The difference in size between these two tire sizes is minimal. The ST225/75-15 will be about 3/4 of an inch more narrow and just under an inch shorter. If the trailer is a production trailer then it should have a sticker or plate somewhere on the tongue or frame listing the correct tire size.

I have included a link to our info page on trailer tires for you.
