Adding Electric Brakes To Utility Trailer With 3,500 LB Axle Towed With 2006 Volkswagen Jetta

Question:

I recently purchased a Carry-on 6X8 trailer. The trailer has a 3500#, 5 lug Dexter axle. I would like to install electric brakes. Is there a kit available to add brakes? If so, please recommend a brake controller.

I have attached a helpful article you can check out that shows all of the components needed to add electric brakes.

You will need several items to add electric brakes to your Carry-On Utility trailer. Starting with the trailer you will need a hub and drum that matches the bearings and seal on your trailer spindle and your wheel bolt pattern. The only way to be sure is to check the bearing part numbers and seal part number, but with a 3,500 lbs Dexter axle that has brake mounting flanges you will most likely have part # L44649 outer bearings and part # L68149 inner bearings and part # 58846 seal. If these are the correct bearing and seal part numbers, the Hub & Drum Assembly, part # 84546UC3, will be the right one for your spindle and 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern.

You will then need 10 x 2-1/4 inch brake assemblies, part # AKEBRK-35L for the left, and part # AKEBRK-35R for the right. These brake assemblies will bolt directly to the 4 bolt brake mounting flanges on your axles, using 8 Brake Mounting Bolt Nuts, part # 6-17, and 8 Brake Mounting Bolt Lockwashers, part # 5-8.

For a brake that may work well for you I recommend the Dexter Nev-R-Adjust Electric Brake Assemblies. Many people do not wish to adjust the brakes after they have them installed and means less hassle. for the Right hand you would order part # K23-479-00, and for the left hand part # K23-478-00. I have attached a product review video for these as well.

To finish the trailer you will need wiring like part # 10-2-1, and a 7-Way connector.

A 7-Way Round RV Style Trailer Side Connector, like part # A7WCB will then need to be wired at the front of the trailer. I have attached a helpful article that shows how this connector is installed.

I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 brake controller, part # 90885. This is our most popular because it is the easiest to install an operate.

If you do not have a connector at the back of your 2006 Volkswagen Jetta, and it is a Sedan with round tail lights, you will need to install a 4-way connector, like the Tow Ready Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, part # 119190KIT. You will then need the Universal Installation Kit, part # ETBC7. This will connect to the 4-way at the rear of your Jetta and give you the 7-way connector needed for your trailer.

When working with electrical connectors I recommend using dielectric grease like part # 11755. This keeps dirt and moisture out of the electrical connections and helps prevent corrosion.

I have attached links to some helpful articles and a video about the products I mentioned you may want to check out.
