Why Does Curt Say a Stabilizer Strap Is Needed for Some Hitches Carrying Bike Racks

What does it mean when it says that stabilizing straps must be used when using a bike rack or other non trailer hitch attachment?

Expert Reply:

Curt specifies that all non-trailer loads - bike racks, cargo carriers and so forth - should be supported with stabilizing straps. Failure to properly support these loads will void your hitch warranty from Curt.

For a stabilizer strap you could use the Curt Strap part # 18050. I attached a video that shows how it installs. Basically it attaches to the trunk lid of your vehicle and to the rack and provides additional support so that the weight of the rack over bumps does not jar the hitch as much.
