Wiring a Car Trailer with a 4-Way Plug with a New 6-Way Connector  

Question:

My trailer has electric breaks but has a flat 4 eire plug can you show me a drawing of how the trailer wiring and how it would be hooked to a 6 wire plug.

Yes, we have a diagram on our wiring page, (see link) that you can use. You will need to remove the 4-Way connector and install a 6-Way connector, item # PK11604. You will have two wires coming off of each brake magnet on the trailer and you will need to ground one wire on each side and splice the other wire on each side to each other and another wire, spliced to these two, will go to the brake connection inside the 6-way connector, item # PK11604. It does not matter which wire from the trailer brakes is grounded because the magnets are not polarity sensitive. Next it is just a matter of wiring the correct wires to the correct connections in the 6-Way connector. If you have a 6-Way on your vehicle, use a circuit tester. item # PTW2993, to wire the connectors by function. If you are installing a 6-Way connector, item # PK11609 on your truck then use the diagram on our wiring page. The blue output wire from the brake controller will be ran to the brake controller connection in the 6-Way connector.
