Why is the Dexter Over-Under Conversion Kits for Double Eye Leaf Springs Only
Question:
I am looking at a Dexter trailer spring over-under conversion kit, code K71-384-00. My Coleman Utah popup trailer has a slipper spring. The slipper part of the spring is bent in an upside-down U and is in a shackle with a bolt to keep the spring from moving away from the trailer frame. Can you tell me why this kit should only be used with double-eye springs only? Can I convert my slipper spring to a double-eye spring? Thanks.

Helpful Expert Reply:
The Dexter Over-Under Conversion Kit, # K71-384-00, is recommended for double eye leaf springs only because it is a bolt-on kit. Slipper springs require the spring seats to be welded to the axle. You could use this kit if you weld the spring seats in place. If you go this route, I recommend having a qualified welder complete the installation to make sure the spring seats are welded properly.
Since the spring seats must be welded in place, you could save some money by simply buying two standard spring seats, # TRSS238, and a u-bolt kit for 2-3/8 inch diameter axles, # APUBR-1.
