Recommended Equipment for Flat Towing 1999 Suzuki Vitara
Question:
Hi, I am trying to figure out the least expensive way to tow my Suzuki Vitara 5sp manual transmission vehicle behind my rv. Prices seem to vary from $160 to $800. I see one for the lessor price that includes brackets for the bumper of my Suzuki. It will only be towed maybe 2 times a year and my reservation is that it says tow speed of 45mph or less. What is your professional advise if I would like to keep the cost at $300 or less? Thanks for your time.

I believe you were referring to the Tow Ready # 63180 tow bar. The two issues you'd face is the 45 mph speed limit and the fact that although the tow bar has brackets of a sort, using a base plate kit like # 1012-1 is recommended, along with a tow bar like the Roadmaster Tracker, part # RM-020. If the manufacturer states that the tow bar should not be used at speeds above 45 mph, I cannot say anything that would contradict that.
You'll also need safety cables like part # RM-643, a wiring option like # RM-2120 and a supplemental braking system of some kind, which is mandated by law in most states. I've linked you to some FAQ articles with more information about flat towing.
The necessary items will cost more than the $ 300.00 figure you mentioned, but you'll save money in the long run by doing it correctly the first time.
