Question:

Looking for a waterproof rooftop cargo carrier for my 2012 Chevy Suburban to get us from Philadelphia to FLorida. It must be waterproof, no exceptions.

In order for something to be considered water proof it has to be able to be submerged under water for a certain period of time and not let in water inside. There are no cargo bags or boxes that are completely water proof.

There are bags that are better than others though. The Thule Outbound cargo bag, # TH868, is going to be the best option. It is IP-X3 certified for water sprays up to 60 degree angles. It has large flaps that cover the openings making it extraordinarily difficult for water to get inside the bag. But with this or any roof mount cargo carrier to ensure items do not get wet you would want to place items in sealed bags or containers.

This cargo bag will only fit if your 2012 Chevy Suburban has factory installed crossbars that run side to side. If it just has side rails that run front to back or a naked roof, this bag will not work.

For a naked roof or side rails only using the Rightline bag # RL100S20 would be a good option. The bag is not quite as water-resistant as the Thule bag but will still keep water out unless you were to dunk it under water or get caught in fierce weather like a hurricane, intense tropical storm, or particularly fierce thunderstorm.

And for any bag you choose I also reocmmend the protective pad # RL100650 to not only protect the vehicle roof but also help keep the bag from moving in transit.

And on taller vehicles like your Suburban, using a wheel step, # HE4040, help to load and unload the bag. Please consult the vehicle owners manual and/or Chevy for the roof capacity before loading anything on the roof.
