Troubleshooting a Reese Brake Controller Install that Only Works When Headlights are On

Question:

I have a Reese electric brake controller that we hooked up into a 1998 Ford explorer. We wired it in, but the electric brakes only works and lights up when the head lights are on. I have never had that before. We have the power for the unit hooked to the battery presently with an inline fuse on it. We have the unit grounded and the trailer and electric trailer wires are all hooked up. What did we not do right here??

It sounds like the problem is in the stoplight switch circuit you used. You want to connect the red wire of your Reese BrakeMan brake controller # 5504 to a circuit that sees 12 volts only when the brakes are applied, regardless if the headlights are on or off.

I attached an FAQ article on brake controller installs for you to check out also.
