You will want to take a measurement to find out if you have the clearance needed for the cargo carrier. You can use a tape measure and a straight edge like a yardstick or a dowel. Place the straight edge against the back edge of your bumper making sure it extends below the hitch. Then measure from the straight edge to the center of the hitch pin hole. This will give you the clearance needed for any carrier you want to install on your 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class.
When the Curt Cargo Carrier part # C18100 is folded up it measures 5 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the nearest edge of the carrier.
If you need more clearance than that you would want a Draw-Tite Hitch Cargo Carrier, part # 6502. This carrier has 7-1/2 inches of clearance when folded up. This carrier measures 20 X 48 inches.
I have attached a couple of helpful articles that explains how to measure for clearance at the back of your vehicle you can check out.
