Installation of a Brake Controller and Trailer Connector On a 2000 Chrysler Town and Country
Question:
Can you recommend a electronic brake controller and do I have to hard wire to my dash or is there a connector? My trailer has two axles and has the two wire magnet brakes. Will I need the 7-way connector? Currently I have just the flat 4-pin. Thank you

Your Chrysler Town and Country will need to be hardwired to install a brake controller. I would recommend the Electronic Trailer Brake Controller Kit, item # ETBC7, which has all of the wiring, circuit breakers and connectors needed to install a 7-Way and 4-Way connector at the rear of your vehicle. I would recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 Brake Controller, item # 90885, which is a proportional controller that is easy to use and works great.
You do not have to install a 7-Way connector to install a brake controller. If you do not need 12 volt power or axillary power functions you can install 5-Way connectors on the vehicle and trailer, item # HM37908, and # 20017. The extra blue wire, on the vehicle side, will be ran to the blue wire on the brake controller, and the blue wire on the trailer will be ran to the trailer brake magnets. You would just cut off the existing 4-Way connector and wire it to the 5-Way color for color. If your trailer has a 7-way connector I would recommend using a 7-Way on the van. If you decide to use the 5-Way connectors you will also need the Universal Brake Control Wiring Kit for 2-8 Brakes, item # 5506, which has all of the wiring and circuit breaker needed to complete the brake controller installation.
You will still be able to use a 4-Way connector with the 5-Way connector also.
