Platform Bike Rack Recommendation for 2015 Subaru Forester with 1-1/4 Inch Hitch Receiver
Question:
Getting a Subaru Forester with a 1 1/4 hitch and looking for a GOOD platform rack for 2 bikes. We will carry either 2 - 29er mtn bikes or 2 road bikes. Please let me know your #1 choice. Thanks

My personal recommendation is the Thule Doubletrack Pro XT Bike Carrier, # TH92BJ. This high quality, USA made, rack is designed for quick and easy loading and unloading and is packed with features, including a receiver lock and locks on the ratcheting arms for added security.
Another popular platform rack is the Swagman XTC-2, # S64670. A bit more economical but still a great product. This rack does not offer the locking features but an Anti-Rattle, Locking Hitch Pin, # S64029, can be added.
I have attached a video of this rack being mounted on a Forester which may be of help to you when deciding.
Please note that if your Subaru Forester is equipped with an OEM hitch, there seems to be a bit of an issue with the hitch pin hole being very close to the end of the receiver. This will cause fit issues with most if not all hitch mounted bike racks. With the hole being so close to the end of the receiver and bike racks that fit 1-1/4 inch hitches having hitch pin holes close to the ends of the shank, there would not be enough shank inside the receiver to safely mount a bike rack. Because of this issue I do not recommend a trailer hitch mount rack for a Forester with an OEM hitch.
If you plan on carrying women's, children's or alternative framed bikes, I recommend an adapter bar like the Swagman Easy-Out, # 64005. This bar attaches between the seat post and the handlebar stem and allows the bike to be carried more evenly in the carrier while providing more ground clearance.
