Using Weight Distribution Towing 2001 Kodiak Hybrid with 2004 Toyota 4 Runner
Question:
I have a 2004 Toyota 4Runner SR5 V6 auto c/w tow pkg and I am looking at purchasing a 2001 Kodiak 21 ft Hybrid with a 3300 lb dry weight and 5000 lb GVW Im told. It comes with a weight distribution hitch but I have seen on some sites that say this is not an option with my vehicle. Please let me know, Ive never towed more than a pop-up. thx

Your towing capacity will depend on how the vehicle is equipped. According to my research, the V6 4 Runner model can tow up to 5000 lbs. The V8 models have a higher tow rating, 7300 lb for 2WD models, or 7000 lb for 4WD models. I would strongly suggest consulting your owners manual or your Toyota dealer for confirmation. Your owner's manual should state if your vehicle is rated for weight distribution.
You'd also need to check your hitch, to ensure it's rated for weight distribution. Your hitch should have a sticker on it that lists its capabilities. If your hitch is rated for use with weight distribution, there will be two ratings listed, one for towing or weight bearing, the other for weight distributing.
It is possible that the hitch might have a higher rating than the vehicle. Any towing system is only as strong as it's lowest rated component, so if the hitch is rated higher than the vehicle, you'd be limited by the towing capacity of the vehicle.
If you plan on using the W/D hitch that is included with the trailer, you'll need to verify that it's properly rated for the weight of the trailer.
I've linked to some weight distribution articles that you might find helpful.
