How Is Trailer Weight Measured for Axle Capacity

Question:

General utility trailer ?. If the tandem axels are rated 3500 each. Is the general load capacity of the trailer 7000 or do you deduct the trailer weight first. Thanks Tim

You will deduct the trailer weight. The tandem 3,500 lb axles are able to hold 7,000 lbs combined assuming weight is distributed equally between them. Most trailers list a dry weight, or unloaded vehicle weight, which is the weight of the trailer with nothing in it. They also list a cargo carrying capacity which is how much you can carry in the trailer along with the GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) which is the max weight fully loaded. Tongue weight is generally deducted from this since it isn't on the axles. The bottom line is your axles can handle 7,000 lbs between the weight of the trailer and any cargo you add.
