What Gauge Wire Is The Black Power Wire Included With The Curt C56331

Question:

Any chance you could tell me what gauge wire it is on the included black wire power lead to the battery on Item C56331 Reason is that every time I use my dump trailer, it blows the included 10amp fuse. I see in the online pics for this kit a blue fuse 15amp but my install instructions show and kit included a red 10amp fuse. If wiring can handle the 15amp fuse or larger I want to try that next time to see if the fuse can survive. PS- it does not seem to be a trailer issue as other vehicles with factory wiring and larger fuses have dumped the trailer without blowing their fuses. Thanks for any help you can provide.

Hello Derek. The included black power lead wire that comes with item # C56331 is 12-gauge wire. They are intended to be used with a 10 amp fuse only and we do not recommend that you exceed this rating.

If the 10 amp fuses continue to blow it could be the result of a short. Please inspect the trailer wiring and vehicle wiring for any damaged, frayed or exposed wire that could be causing a short. Also please make sure the black wire is connected directly to the positive battery terminal, and not another power source. If all of this checks out it could mean that the converter module has gone bad and is in need of replacement.

Thanks Jesse, "Please inspect the trailer wiring and vehicle wiring for any damaged, frayed or exposed wire that could be causing a short." ---Trailer wiring has been inspected and is all good. Dumps without popping fuses on other vehicles. "Also please make sure the black wire is connected directly to the positive battery terminal, and not another power source." ---It is connected directly to battery "If all of this checks out it could mean that the converter module has gone bad and is in need of replacement." ---Is this the black box that is mounted behind the tail light? Bummer if so, since this kit is less than a year old and has only towed about a dozen times. Is a 10a fuse typically sufficient for using a dump trailer? The above mentioned other tow vehicles have factory tow wiring with at least a 30a circuit. Thanks,

@Derek Yes, that is the black box mounted behind the tail lights. The 10 amp fuse definitely should be sufficient so at this point I would have to assume an issue with the converter module. The Curt # C56331 does have a 1 year warranty so that is worth looking in to if you are within that timeframe.
