Wiring Needed For Connecting 2023 Jeep Gladiator With Blue Ox Patriot Using 7-Blade to 6-Pin Harness

Question:

Hi, looking to purchase a diode wiring kit and Blue Ox Patriot braking system for ‘23 Jeep Gladiator that will be towed behind a Class A motorhome. Blue Ox tow kit comes with a 7 pin to 6 pin coiled cable, and I’m wondering how to wire the 6 pin connector at the front of the Jeep to provide all lighting functions AND provide continuous 12V to Roadmaster 12V outlet for the Patriot system with only 6 pins? Specifically, I’m confused about grounding. The EZ wiring diode kit contains a white ground wire and the Roadmaster 12V outlet will also need grounding. I was planning on keeping the 12V outlet purely powered and grounded from the motorhome supply, but now I’m confused as the EZ wiring kit 4-flat connector also has a ground wire that connects to the towed vehicle.

When you wire everything up on your 2023 Jeep Gladiator you are going to need to use the vehicle battery to power the Blue Ox Patriot Portable Flat Tow Brake System # BLU37TR and 12 Volt Outlet Kit # RM-9332. If you tried to wire this directly to the motorhome the breakaway function would fail since it would lose power. We do offer the Charge Line # RM-156-25 that will maintain your Gladiators battery while you are connected to your motor home. This charge line gets connected through the 6-way connector as well. Since you will need to connect to the battery for the power you can use ground connections on your Gladiator and just run a wire from the 6-way connector ground terminal to a ground connection on Gladiator.

I have linked the installation instructions for the Roadmaster Diode 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Wiring Kit # RM-15267 near the bottom of the page which will help you with the wiring connections on the 6-way connector.

Excellent response, and well thought out regarding the breakaway function needing battery power.

@BudM Hi Bud, I have the Roadmaster 12V outlet (RM 9332) and the wire is not long enough to reach the battery on my 2023 Jeep Gladiator. I just watched an etrailer video where Connor extended the wires on an RM9332. He said to use the same gauge wire (16) or preferably larger (14) for the extension, but the video suggested using etrailer part number 10-2-1 wire, which is apparently 10 gauge. Am I ok to use 14 gauge wire for such an extension (obviously I would follow Connor’s recommendation of extending the wire between the fuse and the outlet)? Also, can I use any silicone to seal up the wire connections on the Blue Ox 6 pin connector socket?

@JohnW As long as the wiring used to extend the 12 Volt Outlet Kit # RM-9332 is a larger gauge you are safe to use it. The # 10-2-1 is a commonly used wire in our shop as it is a duplex wire used frequently to wire brake controllers which we often do. I prefer to use Dielectric Grease # 11755 to keep moisture out of the 6-pin connector. With silicone it can make it very difficult to make repairs later down the road.
