The first thing you will need to add a brake controller to your 2020 Toyota Tacoma is 7-way wiring. If you don't already have it, you can use the Tekonsha OEM Replacement Vehicle Wiring Harness w Brake Controller Adapter # 22117. After that all you need is the brake controller itself and the appropriate wiring harness.
For a brake controller, I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty # RED24FR. This brake controller is simple and reliable. It also takes up virtually no space in the cab of your truck. The main unit installs behind the dash and then you can install the control knob in a blank knockout using the # 331-TPSI-002 for an OEM look.
If you have a factory 7-way you can install the brake controller using the Plug-and-Play Wiring Harness for Redarc Tow-Pro Trailer Brake Controllers # RED99FR which plugs into the factory port under your dash. Since you don't have the tow package you will likely need to acquire additional fuses and relays to activate it. If you're using the Tekonsha wiring harness you can use the Redarc Tow-Pro Wiring Adapter for Tekonsha Brake Controller Harness # 331-TPH-017.
