What is the Purpose of a Stabilizer Strap When Carrying a Bike Rack with a Curt Hitch

Question:

I intend to install this hitch on my 2009 Honda Odyssey for the purpose of hauling bikes using a DrawTite rear hitch bicycle rack. I may also install a class II hitch on my 2014 Ietta Sportwagen for the same purpose. What are stabilizing straps, why do I need them, how do they work, and where can I find them?

The stabilizer strap part # 18050 attaches to the top edge of your trunk lid and then attaches to the bike rack to provide additional support for bike racks or cargo carriers. It basically helps take out some of the shock that would normally get transferred to your hitch from bumps in the road.

Other manufacturers do not require the strap, but if have use a Curt hitch they will require the use of the strap otherwise it will void the hitch warranty. For a hitch that would not require the strap I would recommend the Draw-Tite part # 75270. This is a Class III hitch with a 2 inch opening that would give you more flexibility with hitch accessories than a Class II hitch. I attached an FAQ on hitch classifications for you to check out also.

To see how it installs check out the video I attached.
