Parts Needed to Install a 7-way and Hardwire a Brake Controller on a 2001 Dodge Ram Van 1500
Question:
Im trying to figure how to connect a 7 way plug on my 2001 dodge ram 1500 van. It appears to have a connector underneath the back drivers side corner with 5 wires coming to it. I thought I would probably have to get a 3 way wire harness that goes to a four prong adaptor and then hardwire my brake controller. But why are there 5 wires going to the OEM adaptor?

That we are aware of there isn't a trailer wiring harness present at the rear of a 2001 Dodge Ram Van. However, you could use a circuit tester like our part # PTW2992 and test the circuits of the harness for taillight functions. Check out the video I attached that would show you the basic principle of testing the functions.
Since we do not have a connector that would connect to that harness you could use those circuit in that connector to install a Draw-Tite 4-way part # 18252. Install video attached for this.
Now to install your brake controller and convert the 4-way to a 7-way you need the Brake Controller Installation Kit part # ETBC7. This comes with everything needed to convert the 4-way to a fully functional 7-way and hardwire in your brake controller. Install video and instructions attached for this as well.
