Can Heavier Duty Leaf Springs Be Installed on a 2021 Coachmen Catalina Travel Trailer

Question:

Hello, I have a 2021 Catalina travel trailer 26ft. The OEM Dexter 3500lb axles have 1750lb springs that have flattened once and are already looking poor after another 4000 miles in one season. The main issue is the passenger side has all of the cabinets fridge water heater and stove. This side has a lot of preload. Can I upgrade to 2200 springs without to much issue?

Hi James,

You can swap out the leaf springs to help reduce wear but you'll most likely notice a little bit stiffer of a ride, but not enough to really matter. To find the correct replacement you'll first need to measure the leaf spring so that we can find a compatible replacement. I've attached two diagrams below to show you how measure your leaf springs. Once you have the measurements let me know and I'd be happy to look for a replacement.

Another option to help support your suspension would be to install SumoSpring jounce bumpers like the SumoSpring # TSS-106-40 (underslung) or # TSS-107-40 (overslung) depending on the orientation of your axle and leaf spring.

25 1/8 Overslung axle. The Springs were replaced last year can I reuse the wet bolts? I understand I will need to replace the U bolts.

@JamesH You can definitely use the same wet bolts, I'd just doublecheck the shackle straps for any wear in the bolt holes. In 25-1/8" leaf springs we currently only offer a 3.5k # e68SR and 6k # e47SR. The 6k option is most likely going to be a bit too stiff so you'd be better off switching to 25-1/4" sizing and either going with the 4k # e57SR or 5K # e44SR. Personally, I'd go with the 4k # e57SR along with the SumoSprings # TSS-107-40 to help cushion the suspension.
