Why Does The Roadmaster Battery Disconnect RM-766 Attach To The Positive Battery Post

Question:

I just watched your youtube video regarding the installation of the Roadmaster RM-766 Battery Disconnect on a 2021 Buick Encore GX. I have 2 questions: ! The Buick tow flat instructions say to disconnect the negative post, yet this install disconnects the positive side. What is the difference? 2 Can the switch be installed such that power remains to components that store settings, clock, radio stations, etc.? Thanks for your support! Brad

Hey Brad, that is a good question. The Roadmaster Battery Disconnect # RM-766 attaches to the positive battery post because that is what the polarity of the solenoid is designed for. This also allows for a positive current source for accessories such as a breakaway switch or stop light switch.

If you were to disconnect the battery without using a Roadmaster Battery Disconnect, you would just pull the negative cable off like it says in your manual. With the # RM-766 though it will connect to the positive post and the negative cable will remain attached. You will basically still follow the instructions in your owner's manual for disconnecting the battery. At the point the manual instructs you to disconnect the battery, you will instead push the button to “tow.” Then when you are ready to drive the vehicle, at the point the manual says to reconnect the battery, you will switch it to "drive".

Using the Roadmaster Battery Disconnect # RM-766 will affect the vehicles electronics. You will have to reset some dashboard presets. I am afraid there is no way around this.

I have linked the manufacturer instruction below for your reference.
