Are There Hitch Mounted Tire Carriers With Swing-Away Shanks Available
Question:
Question: Hello, I am seeking a hitch mounted spare tire holder for a 2019 Audi Q7 with a 285 40 ZR 21 tire. Any suggestions? Thank you so much, Hope Wagner asked by: Hope W Expert Reply: For your 285/40ZR21 tires with a 5 x 112 bolt pattern I recommend the etrailer Hitch Mounted Spare Tire Carrier # e98ZR. This carrier is designed to mount into the a 2inch trailer hitch and has slots for the wheel mounting bolts to move around and fit a wide variety of wheels. This will also come with a hitch pin and collar to help secure the carrier in the hitch quickly. Ive attached a short video below where AJ will go over use of this carrier. expert reply by: Kevin C Thank you Kevin for your help. Would they make this in a version that would swing away to allow access to the rear hatch of my car? Thanks again, Hope

We don't currently offer any hitch mounted spare tire carriers with a swing-away function, but you could get a swing-away adapter like the Yakima BackSwing Swing Away Hitch Extender for Bike Racks # Y02483. This would mount in your Q7's 2" trailer hitch and allow you to mount the # e98ZR into the 2" receiver tube opening. Since this is an adapter it will reduce the hitch's capacity by 50% so you'll want verify the weight of the wheel/tire along with the weight of the carrier (35lbs) to ensure that your hitch has enough capacity left.
I've attached a short video below where you can see just how far this will stick out from the rear of the Q7 and how the swing-away function works.
