Do I Need to Upgrade to a Higher Capacity 5th Wheel Hitch?

Question:

I have a fifth wheel hitch mounted on a rail system. It’s rated for 20k. I can gross up to 19k trailer and load when I tow. Should I upgrade to a higher rated hitch?

Yes, I think it would not only be smart but safer for you to upgrade your 5th wheel hitch. It is recommend to have a 5th wheel hitch that is a minimum of 20% over your trailer's gross weight. 20% of 19,000 lbs is 3,800 lbs so you will want a hitch with at least a 22,800 lbs capacity.

The closest hitch to 22,800 lbs that mounts on 5th wheel rails is the Curt Q24 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch item # C16245. The Q24 will provide you with a 24,000 lbs towing capacity and a 6,000 lbs vertical load limit. It has a premium 2-jaw locking system that will provide 360-degree jaw-to-king-pin contact and a self-aligning head that pivots for simple hookup with your trailer.

I have linked a review video below so you can see the functions of this hitch demonstrated.
