Can a Modern Flat Tow Brake Systme Be Installed on a 1973 Mercedes-Benz 450SL
Question:
For Brake Buddy Stealth Supplemental Braking System - Proportional Item # HM39530 I have a classic 1973 450SL I’d like to flat tow behind my RV. I like the features of the Brake Buddy and definitely want proportional braking. The list of supported vehicles doesn’t go into this sort of application. So I wondered if there was any reason that it definitely would not work. It’s a standard hydronic power-assist 4-wheel disc brake setup. Not looking for any specific experience with this specific model or any sort of claim or guarantee. Just advice or a source to get advice. If there’s another product that might be a better choice then please provide as well. Thanks in advance.

You are correct that flat tow braking systems are essentially universal so yes, the Brake Buddy Stealth Supplemental Braking System # HM39530 should be able to work on your 1973 Mercedes-Benz 450SL since it has a brake pedal and a 12V battery to power this unit.
With that being said, I'm not a fan of the Stealth system at all. It can work but when I've spoken to our install team about this it's a bit finicky to install so they really don't like messing with it. I have some alternative solutions for you that aren't as cost-effective but they are definitely more reliable when it comes to the installation.
My go-to systems come from Demco and are permanently installed like the Stealth, but they are just more all-around reliable and they don't require a controller in the cab of your motorhome. The correct one just depends on what kind of brakes your motorhome is equipped with:
- Hydraulic Motorhome Brakes # DM86VR
- Air Motorhome Brakes # DM26VR
I'm attaching some review videos for you to check out!
