Does the Weight of a Weight Distribution System Count Towards Tongue Weight or Payload?
Question:
What an informative website you have! Im about to be the owner of a travel trailer with 850 lb tongue weight. The GVWR of the travel trailer is 7,600 lbs. My VW Touareg tows 7,700 lbs. So towing capacity is ok. The issue is my VWs payload is only 1055 lbs. So after occupants me and my dog and tongue weight, I calculate I only have about 75 lbs left over for the hitch ball and sway bars. 1055 lb payload capacity - 130 lb occupants + 850 lb tongue weight = 75 lb. Am Im calculating payload and hitch ball/sway bars correctly? If my calculation is correct, I need a hitch ball and sway/distribution bars that are lighter than the Equal-i-zer with which I have experience on a smaller travel trailer. The Equal-i-zer will weigh close to 100 lbs. How many pounds does the Blue Ox SwayPro BXW1000 weigh? Are there any lighter choices than Blue Ox that are also suitable? Thank you

Congrats on the new travel trailer! No, you are not calculating everything for payload correctly. The 90 lbs of the Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution item # BXW1000 does not get added to tongue weight. It distributes weight from the rear of your VW to the front axles but it's weight does not count towards tongue weight so it is also not applied to the payload.
The Blue Ox SwayPro Weight Distribution item # BXW1000 weighs 90 lbs. It works with trailers have tongue weights between 750 lbs - 1,000 lbs. You are right in the middle of that range so this system would work perfectly for you.
