Parts Needed to Install a Trailer Brake Controller on a 1997 Dodge Ram 1500
Question:
I have the above vehicle and am wanting to pull trailers with it. I have the Tekonsha Primus IQ controller which I had installed on my truck before this one. So I am wanting to us it, but the 97 does not have any trailer wiring to the back that I can see. Under the dash I have located a white connector for that 3020-P would connect to. So what wiring kit would I need to accomplish this? On the back of the truck I do not see a 4 wire flat plug or a 7 way. I know I will need the 3020-P for sure. Will I also need the ETBC-7 wiring kit?

Since your 1997 Dodge Ram 1500 did not come with a factory trailer connector you will need to hardwire in your brake controller. This means that you would not use wiring harness # 3020-P because the wiring for it is not active even if that plug is there under the dash.
So the first thing you will need to install is a 4-Way flat, # 18252. This will make installing the 7-Way easier. Once you have the 4-Way installed you will then need the 4 and 7-Way installation kit # ETBC7. You will plug in the 4-Way to the ETBC7 to provide the light functions for the trailer.
Thee ETBC7 also includes the wiring and accessories needed to hardwire in your brake controller. I have included some links that explain and show the ETBC7 installation for you.
Since you already have a brake controller these are the only parts you will need.
