Can I Use A Demco Bolt-On Coupler With A Tubular Trailer Tongue

Question:

Bought Demcos A-Frame Trailer Coupler w/ Jack Hole - eZ-Latch - Black - 2 Ball - Bolt On - 10K - DM14793-81 to replace the one on the trailer. I watched the videos which made it easy enough to install. What I failed to see is that my trailer Iframe is tubular whereas, your videos shows the use of right angle iron frames. My buddy whose helping me says I can drill through the tubular frame to attach the coupler. I dont know, so I thought Id ask. I mean, why was the original coupler welded on, not drilled. Maybe its not supposed to be drilled. Id appreciate an answer. Thank You.

That is an interesting question. We do caution against bolting the Demco Coupler # DM14793-81 to a round tube. While you might be able to drill holes and tighten the bolts properly, the concern would be that the body of the coupler is not making full contact with the frame. As you said, they are intended for rectangular or right angle stock steel. With a part of the trailer as important as the coupler, it is an area where we would want to take any risks.

Your best bet would be to take the trailer to a welder and have them add some kind of right angle material to the tongue so that it will properly fill out the inside of the A-frame coupler. We do not offer any kind of bolt-on coupler intended for a tubular frame.
