Trailer Wiring Harness Options for a 2013 Base Ford Explorer
Question:
The web page for C56172 says it fits 2011-2014 Ford Explorer all models as well as 2011-2014 Ford Explorer with Factory Tow Package. When I look at the Questions and Answers, one says you can use C56172 Where Does Curt Trailer Wiring Install on a Base Model 2013 Ford Explorer and another, at least for a 2014 Explorer, says you would need 56146KIT Trailer Wiring for a 2014 Ford Explorer. My vehicle is a 2013 base Ford Explorer and it has a single connector that looks like your wiring harness connector with a dust cap. Will C56172 work for my vehicle? If so, do I just plug in one cable assembly connector to the vehicle connector and use the dust cap on the second cable assembly connector?

The Curt Wiring Harness part # C56172 that you referenced will work on your 2013 Ford Explorer base model. This harness installs by plugging inline with your taillight wiring harness. I attached an installation video for this product for you to check out as well.
The Curt Wiring Harness part # 56146KIT is a hardwire option for your vehicle. What is nice about this harness is that it draws all the amperage needed to power your trailer lights from the vehicle battery and only uses the taillight circuits as signal wires. Install video attached as well.
To compare the two harnesses you get installation convenience if you use the # C56172 on your vehicle, whereas with the # C59496 you get taillight circuit protection.
