Is a Class I Trailer Hitch Receiver Going To Be Enough For Towing a 1,050LB Sailboat?

Question:

Hi There! Im looking to buy a new car to pull my 19-foot, 1050-pound sailboat. There is some concern about the length of the boat and sway that could occur. Are we overthinking things? Would class one work or do I need class 2? Kindly

You should not have any trouble towing your 1,050lb sail boat with either a class I or II trailer hitch receiver. It is most important to check the towing capability of your vehicle to ensure it is capable of towing the necessary weight. Too often vehicles which can have a receiver mounted cannot actually tow, but a receiver can be installed for items like a bike rack. As for sway with your boat there are some steps you can take like positioning the boat on the trailer to help ensure there is enough tongue weight. Having too little tongue weight is the leading cause of trailer sway and then the wind pressure as well. If you can find a vehicle which will accept a 2" receiver and can be used with a weight distribution hitch that is the best option for towing safely.

If you have a certain vehicle in mind please let me know and I can help you determine if it is a good vehicle for towing or if there is a better similar option.
