Solution for an Atwood Water Heater that Sparks But Does Not Ignite

Question:

I am helping a friend with her GCH6A-10E SP water heater. I found that it sparks, but will not ignite, though it lights if a flame is used. The burner then shuts off abruptly after maybe 5-6 seconds. I cleaned all the contacts and the electrode and spark rod. I found only 8.9V at the gas valve solenoid, and I’m wondering if that could be our problem? I see the schematic sticker shows an electric element, but I don’t see one. As a side question: in this 1965 Airstream, are the batteries charged somehow by shore power? Thank you!

Since you're not getting a full 12V to your solenoid that's a tell-tell sign that you have a faulty control board. Replacing the control board with the Replacement Control Panel for Atwood Water Heaters # AT91367 will fix the issue.

As far as your batteries go, if your trailer is connected to shore power then yes your batteries will also be charged. If they are not, then you'll need to check the fuses on your electrical panel. If none of them are blown, then it’s possible your converter is no longer working.
