can I just use a hitch extender for the added clearance i need ? 2004 coachman concord motorhome The reciever is actually under by about 8 inches.

You certainly can use a hitch extender to gain the clearance you need. 8 inches is pretty far recessed behind the bumper, so an 8" extension like the # e88YR should do the trick if you want to use a carrier like the Carpod # M2200-2201.
The only downside is that using an extension does effectively reduce your hitches tongue weight capacity by half. So you will be slightly limited in your carrying capacity. For a recessed hitch like yours though, this will be the only option.
