Troubleshooting Hyperflashing Lighting on Trailer Towed by 2000 Toytoa Tacoma

Question:

I have an issue I believe to be in the trailer light converter on my 00 Tacoma. Turn left turn signal... flashed quickly or not at all. Replaced left turn signal bulbs with new LEDs. This solved the intermittent issue, but the lights flash faster now than before. Rapid Flashing. However, now and the reason I believe the problem is in the converter..., when I use the RIGHT turn signal, it flashes at the normal rate... but when I apply the BRAKES, the RIGHT turn signal stays on. This seems to me to be a short in the trailer lighting converter. I poked at it and it seemsinch to be the Curtis type which is not recommended with LED bulbs.. perhaps thats OEM LED bulbs? At any rate... Im wondering if the trailer light converter could have failed. Not happy with the setup that was installed in my rig by the RV dealer.... saw your plug ininch solution after looking at your videos... Im thinking of ordering the molex plug in setup... and CERTAINLY will use you guys for my next NEW rig which Im looking to get this year. Planning on digging into the wiring later this afternoon/evening... have a voltmeter....and know how to use it.

It sounds like you might have more than one issue going on, possibly a faulty converter and maybe a wiring problem on your trailer.

Lets begin by troubleshooting the converter/trailer connector on the vehicle. Use your circuit tester or voltmeter on the trailer connector while each function is activated. There should be no voltage on the pins unless the function is activated. If you are not getting voltage at the connector as a certain function is activated, check the circuits on the input side of the converter. If you have signal entering, but not exiting the converter, it is a sure sign the converter is damaged and should be replaced. Before replacing the converter, you will need to closely examine the wiring system on your trailer, if you do not, and there is a wiring problem on the trailer, you will continue to short out converters.

Begin at the trailer connector, and inspect it for corrosion or damage. Clean and replace as needed. Follow each circuit back to its lamp, looking for pinched wires or wiring with cracked or worn insulation, and repair as needed.

If the LED lamps are on the trailer, and the Tacoma is equipped with a bulb-out sensor, the hyperflashing you are experiencing is being caused by the bulb-out sensor. Because LED lamps draw so little power compared to incandescent bulbs, the vehicle thinks the bulb is burned out and hyperflashes to warn you. You can fix this by installing load resistors like part # DI34ZR inline with the right and left turn/brake light circuits on the trailer, which will fool the bulb-out sensors by creating a bit more draw on the circuits. I have linked you to the installation instructions for the load resistors.

I have also linked you to our Trailer Wiring Troubleshooting article, which I hope you will find helpful. Please let me know if everything mentioned above checks out okay.
