Should Kayak Rest On Upright Arm Padding of J-Style Kayak Carrier
Question:
Must a kayak rest on the padding on both sides of the J hook? I have a flat/sit on kayak and when it is loaded/standing it is not touching the taller/inside of the J hook padding? Is that OK ?

I am not sure which kayak carrier you have, or how much contact you have with the upright arm, but in general you want it making contact with the padding. It sounds like you have it positioned in a way where it is touching the top edge above the padding. It would be a good idea to check the owner's manual to see what it says for your particular carrier.
Ideally, you want as much surface area as possible making contact. That typically doesn't mean it's perfectly flat since kayaks have many shapes, but it should be more than barely touching on the metal. Not only will this help keep it stabilized on your roof in the wind, it will keep you from scratching up your kayak and the carrier which would be the main concern. I would try changing the angle if possible to get it in there securely and on the padding.
If you can't find a good way to position it so you don't scratch it up, you may consider switching to a saddle style like the Malone SeaWing # MPG107MD. This is also available with load assist # MPG113MD. This style might work better based on your description since it can lay flat on the carrier.
Feel free to send me some pictures if you have them and I can get a better idea based on your carrier and the position of the kayak.
